Alan McGowan is currently a Lecturer at The New School, having served as chair of the science program and then of the environmental studies program. He stepped down to adjunct status from Associate Professor in 2016. He is an Executive Editor of Environment magazine and chairman of the Legal and Governance Committee of the board of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. He was selected as 2019’s Top Science and Technical Expert by the International Association of Top Professionals and also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who that same year. Prior to this, he was for twenty years President of the Scientists’ Institute for Public Information, a major bridge between the science and media communities. He then founded and ran the Gene Media Forum, a similar bridge focusing on genetics. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, where he was also the Director of Public Understanding of Science Programs. He has published over fifty articles in both peer-reviewed and popular journals, and over one hundred editorials for Environment magazine.
