Prof. Dr. Michael Laar completed his architectural studies in Munich/Germany in 1993 and began his career as an architect at the Institute for Ecological Architecture and Urban Design in Cologne. Parallel to his professional career, he completed an evening course at the Institute for Tropical Technology, which he completed as a Master of Engineering. He received a DAAD scholarship for his six-month thesis in Brazil. After working as an architect and research assistant, he completed his doctorate at the Bauhaus University Weimar, also funded by a scholarship, on the dynamic calculation of daylight using the example of Rio de Janeiro. At the same time, he carried out research projects in Rio de Janeiro in areas such as green roofs and indoor comfort. After completing his doctorate, Prof. Dr. Laar founded a planning and consulting office for sustainable building in Rio de Janeiro, from where he carried out projects in Egypt, Brazil, China, Germany, South Africa and Tunisia, among others. In parallel he worked as professor at the Lutheran University of Brazil in Manaus in the amazon region. This was followed by several years as long term expert in Mauritius, Peru, Mozambique and again in Brazil, where he managed projects in the field of sustainability on behalf of the German government and the EU as an advisor to national governments. In 2019, he was appointed as full professor to the Deggendorf Institute of Technology in Southern Germany to set up the Master's degree program “Healthy and Sustainable Buildings” at the European-Campus-Rottal-Inn. Since 2021, he also holds the role of Sustainability Officer at DIT. Prof. Dr. Laar has received numerous awards, published over 70 articles, received several patents and is an expert for sustainable public buildings (BNB AP) and LEED Accredited Professional.
